Data Explorer
After reading this guide, you will be able to:
- Search and browse Climatiq’s emission factor database using filters
- Understand which features are available on your plan
- Export emission factors for use in external tools and reporting templates
- Troubleshoot common issues with search results and access
What is Data Explorer
Data Explorer is Climatiq’s web-based interface for navigating and searching a vetted database of emission factors. It contains a growing library of vetted factors across geographies, data sources, and lifecycle stages, which you can filter to find the factors that best match your reporting needs.
You can use Data Explorer to:
- Browse the Climatiq database without any coding or spreadsheet setup
- Search using the search bar and filters to find factors by source, region, sector, scope, and unit type
- Access detailed information on each emission factor, including its source, methodology, and LCA stage
- Share URLs with colleagues and insert them into reports as a reference
Access and plans
Sign up to Climatiq using your organization email to get started on the Starter plan, which includes core emission factor search and CO2e values. Advanced filters, full metadata, and export require a Data Pro or Enterprise plan. See our pricing page for a full feature breakdown.
Features
Emission Factor Search and Browsing
Available on: All plans
Provides a searchable, filterable index of all emission factors Climatiq has ingested and normalized. You can type free-text queries (for example, “natural gas combustion”) or browse using the available filters.
Plan differences:
- Starter users can search and browse but receive limited metadata (name, source, region, unit, CO2e value)
- Starter users can filter by keyword search, region, source, and year valid only
- Premium datasets require an active license to view full factor details
- Mapping Agent is available to all logged-in users
Advanced Search Filters
Available on: Data Pro, Enterprise
Allows you to narrow search results using the full metadata taxonomy. Filter dimensions include:
- Sector (17 available: Energy, Transport, Waste, Education, Information and Communication, and more)
- Category (sub-sector classification)
- Region (country, regional groupings, city-level where available)
- Source
- Year valid (year that the factor is applicable)
- Unit type (money, weight, volume, energy, and more)
- GHG scope (1, 2, 3) and Scope 3 categories (3.1, 3.2, and so on)
- Lifecycle activity (for example, cradle-to-gate, use phase, end-of-life)
Example: You need Scope 3 Category 6 (Business Travel) factors for road travel in Germany, per passenger-km. Combine Scope = 3.6, Category = Road Travel, Region = Germany, and Unit = PassengerOverDistance to get a precise shortlist without manually reviewing hundreds of results.
Detailed Metadata
Available on: Data Pro, Enterprise (Starter: limited subset only)
Exposes the full structured metadata record for each emission factor, covering activity ID, sector, category, scope breakdown, unit type, CO2e calculation method, and LCA activity stage. See our pricing page for a full feature breakdown.
Export
Available on: Data Pro (not available on Starter or Enterprise)
Allows you to download selected emission factors and their associated metadata for use in external tools, reporting templates, or internal systems. The export format is a standard structured file (CSV or similar) containing factor values and the full metadata record for each selected factor.
Licensing note: Exported data is subject to the license terms of both Climatiq and the underlying dataset. Non-commercial licenses (Starter, standard Data Pro) restrict use to internal, non-revenue-generating purposes. For client-facing or commercial use, a commercial license is required. See licensing details .
FAQ
Filters and Detailed Metadata are blocked — what can I do?
- Check that you are logged in with the email address you used to sign up to Climatiq and that your subscription is active.
- Go to your user profile, select My Plans, and confirm that Core Data is enabled (shown in green).
If neither of these resolves the issue, contact support@climatiq.io.
The raw emission value is blurred even though I have a paid subscription
This is related to the licensing terms of the underlying dataset. You can still use these emission factors in calculations via the Excel Add-in, Google Sheets Extension, or API endpoints — the raw value is restricted from display under the data provider’s license. If you are unsure or would like to check, reach out to support@climatiq.io.
I get zero results for an emission factor I’m searching for
There are a few possible reasons:
- The filters you have applied are too restrictive — try removing one or more filters to broaden results
- No data exists for that specific region, year, or other input combination
- The search terms do not match any emission factor in the Climatiq database — try using Mapping Agent to get broader suggestions
If no exact match exists, look for fallback values that could still give a reasonable estimate for your activity.
I’ve purchased the right data access but don’t see the factors in my search results
- Check that you are logged in with the email address associated with your Climatiq subscription.
- Go to your user profile, select My Plans, and confirm you have access to the correct product.
- Cross-reference against your service order, which outlines the Climatiq products you have purchased.
If the issue persists, contact support@climatiq.io.
The emission factor data I see is wrong, misleading, or unclear — what can I do?
Our carbon experts are happy to investigate. Email support@climatiq.io with the following details:
- Emission factor ID
- Raw emission value
- Any filters you applied
- What appears wrong or unclear, and what you would expect the correct value or description to be
