Release 21

Data Release 21

This is Data Release 21, released on April 8th, 2025. To use the (automatically-updating) dynamic version, you can use ^21. To use the fixed (unchanging) version, you can use 21. See more information about our data versioning scheme at the reference page.

Simplified data versions
We have simplified how we talk about and accept data versions based on user feedback. The 21.21 version format still works and is equivalent to the new fixed version format 21.

Data Release 21 is our biggest data release ever, with over 100.000 new emission factors added!

It also contains important corrections pertaining to emission factors for refrigerant gases, that could previously return wrong results if you explicitly specified the calculation_method. See the Data Changed section for more details. If you were using emission factors for refrigerant gases with an explicitly specified calculation_method, we strongly recommend that you update your data version.

New Data

This data release contains emission factors from:

  • PCAF: European building emission factor database for 2023, offering emission factors for mortgages and real estate across Europe.
  • Agribalyse v3.2: covering emission factors for food production on different LCA stages.
  • OpenIO v2.9: including spend-based emission factors for Canada for 2018, 2019 and 2020.
  • EPA: 2025 GHG Emission Factors Hub dataset, which includes emission factors for the transport, energy, and waste sectors in the US.
  • EPA eGRID: 2025 electricity emission factors data covering US eGRID subregions.
  • Green-e: 2024 electricity residual mix data, covering the US eGRID subregions.
  • Circular Ecology: ICE Database v4 including 2024 emission factors data for building construction materials.
  • CO2 Emissiefactoren: 2024 emission factors data on transport, energy, materials and manufacturing, and refrigerant gases for the Netherlands.
  • Electricity info: 2024 UK electricity supplier specific data.
  • Covenant of Mayors: 2024 electricity generation and upstream emission factors data.
  • WRAP v2.0: HESTIA data on food production.
  • GHG Protocol (IPCC): AR6 GWP for refrigerant gases.

Data Changed

This list only covers major changes. Changes covering a smaller subset of emission factors, or changes such as name or description changes, are not listed. Find a link at the end of this document to a structured table listing all changes.

  • We have updated incorrect values for refrigerant gases for more than 600 emission factors from these sources: BEIS, GHG Protocol, and GLEC. If you are using refrigerant gases from these sources, please update your data version to 21.
  • We have improved names and activity IDs for the "Circular Ecology" source.
  • We have adjusted several activity IDs and categories around Transport, Waste and Consumer Goods and Services sectors from the OpenIO v2.9 dataset.

Data Removed

No data has been removed in this release.
