Mapping Agent: 3x more accurate emission factor mappings for highly technical inputs

Mapping Agent: 3x more accurate emission factor mappings for highly technical inputs

None of the sustainability professionals we’ve met got into the field because they have a deep passion for manually copying data in and out of spreadsheets. Yet somehow, finding and mapping emission factors to business data takes weeks out of their year, every year. Most keep messy spreadsheets of custom datasets they use frequently, but manual processes like this mean data can easily fall out of date and create inaccuracies, leading to big trouble when they file reports with mistakes in them.

As most manufacturers move towards more granular product-level emissions measurements, emission factor management and mapping is about to get even more complicated. Product carbon footprints (PCFs) require hundreds of components to be mapped to emission factors for each individual product. Multiply that across an entire supply chain, and you are quickly going to overwhelm even the biggest sustainability teams.

At that scale, keeping a neat and organized selection of relevant factors in a curated spreadsheet is not realistic or practical. More advanced, automated tools are essential—and that’s exactly where Mapping Agent steps in.

Text input in, emission factor matches out

Mapping Agent allows you to almost-instantly match unstructured text from BoMs or invoices to the right emission factors, no matter how complex or technical they are.

It automates this process by taking a plain-language description of your business activity and searching Climatiq’s database of over 1 million emission factors (and counting) to find the best-matching factors. Each result gives you a full overview of the matched emission factor including its metadata, along with a quality label that tells you how confident the model is in the match so you know which results to use directly and which ones to check first.

If you want alternative options, Mapping Agent provides a selection of suggested factors automatically, and you can always adapt your search term to get more fitting results. Mapping Agent can easily adjust to global operations and supply chains, with support for 47 languages. That means you don’t have to modify inputs to receive great matches or worry about translation workflows.

The GA release of Mapping Agent introduces agentic reasoning to automatically source the context on the terms it is mapping. This step means that, according to our testing, the new version of Mapping Agent delivers a 3x improvement when dealing with highly complex terminology. That means faster PCF workflows for our users, because they can get the best match with the first try.

      Exclusive to Climatiq

Mapping Agent is powered by our proprietary ML model, which is trained on Climatiq’s verified emissions data and scientific methodology. We have an entire AI team dedicated to building this model and making it the very best tool for the job. We are ISO 27001 and SOC 2 certified, and have enterprise-grade security measures.

This approach isn’t the easiest one, but we believe it’s the best way to deliver both the results and the data security our customers require across our Studio products and when building with our APIs.

What’s new in the general access release of Mapping Agent

After much testing and continuous improvements, we’re happy to announce Mapping Agent is now out of its beta phase and is production-ready for both API and Studio users.

The most significant update is that Mapping Agent now uses agentic AI to find matches. What that means for you:

      • Agentic AI incorporates additional context outside of the inputted text alone, meaning it can make more informed decisions when picking a matching emission factor
        • For example, agentic AI swaps the search term “mamba green Skoda G6E” to “automotive paint manufacturing”, using the brand name to assume meaning
      • Mapping Agent now provides 3x more accurate matches on the most complex, highly technical content
      • When doing CSV BoM uploads in PCF Studio, you’ll now automatically get more accurate matches for your components thanks to agentic AI
      • For our API customers, Mapping Agent will default to agentic mode to favor the best results. It may return results slightly slower, but we believe the increased accuracy results in a much faster overall process

This means you can get matches from our database of over 1 million verified emission factors without any manual searching or messy spreadsheets, cutting days of work down to a matter of minutes. The PCF calculation burden becomes a walk in the park: even products containing hundreds of components can be mapped in moments.

      Get started with Mapping Agent

This is part of our commitment to making AI work for sustainability professionals, accelerating their workflows without sacrificing control or transparency. At the end of the day that means less time stuck in spreadsheets, and more time for impact work.

You can try Mapping Agent through Data Studio for up to 200 rows of input data, or give it a quick spin through PCF Studio and see how quickly and easily it matches component data to emission factors. For bigger projects and tools, Mapping Agent is already proven at enterprise scale—you can contact our sales team to integrate the Mapping Agent API into your applications.
