The magnesium chloride is obtained during the production of hafnium sponge using the Kroll process, in the reduction and distillation step, described by the following reaction: HfCl4 + 2Mg -> Hf + 2MgCl2. Through the electrolysis of magnesium chloride, part of the Mg and Cl is recovered and then reused in the Kroll process. This product should not be used in any other context.
