Emission factor summary

Emissions generated by the activity within the product supply chain as described in ecoinvent v3.8. At room temperature, nitric oxide appears as transparent, toxic and not flammable gas. In contact with atmospheric oxygen, nitric oxide immediately oxidizes to nitrogen dioxide, which is of brown color. Some previous commercial uses of nitric oxide are not relevant anymore and today nitric oxide is rarely used directly. However, it is of high importance as an intermediate in the Ostwald process (for making nitric acid), where large quantities of nitric oxide are being produced (Thiemann et al., 2000). Reference(s): Thiemann, M., Scheibler, E. and Wiegand, K. W. 2000. Nitric Acid, Nitrous Acid, and Nitrogen Oxides. Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry. pp. 4. Wiley-VCH, Weinheim. The cut-off classification is allocatable product. The activity type is ordinary transforming activity. The reference product amount is 1.
