Emission Factor

Chlorine for reuse in zirconium and hafnium tetrachloride production (electrolysis of magnesium chloride from hafnium sponge production)

Emission factor summary

Emissions generated by the activity within the product supply chain as described in ecoinvent v3.10. This product represents chlorine produced by the electrolysis of magnesium chloride according to the following reaction: MgCl2 -> Mg + Cl2. The magnesium chloride is obtained during the production of zirconium sponge using the Kroll process in the reduction and distillation step described by the following reaction: ZrCl4 + 2Mg -> Zr + 2MgCl2. Through the electrolysis of magnesium chloride part of the Mg and Cl is recovered and then reused in the Kroll process. The chlorine is used as input to the carbochlorination and extractive distillation process which produces zirconium and hafnium tetrachloride according to the following reaction: Zr(Hf)SiO4 + 4C + 4Cl2 = Zr(Hf)Cl4 + SiCl4 + 4CO. This product should not be used in any other context. The cut-off classification is allocatable product. The activity type is ordinary transforming activity. The reference product amount is 1.
