Flax straw - dew-retted (flax straw production)

The product flax straw, dew-retted refers to the harvested flax stems which have undergone the process of dew-retting. During retting, micro-organisms and moisture weaken the cellular tissues and pectin which surround bast-fibre bundles. This facilitates the subsequent separation of the outer bast fibres from the woody inner stalk core (hurd/shive). The most common forms of retting are dew/field and water retting. In dew (or field) retting, flax stems are spread evenly over fields where a combined action of bacteria, sun, air and dew leads to the fermentation of the stalks. The Reference Product amount is 1.
