About Cornerstone Sustainability Data Initiative

Cornerstone is a sustainability data initiative that maintains and publishes key US environmental datasets, including the US Environmentally-Extended Input-Output (USEEIO) family of models, the U.S. EPA's GHG Emission Factors Hub, and eGRID electricity emission factors, originally developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). USEEIO provides open emission factors across more than 400 sectors of the US economy and is widely used for Scope 3 corporate accounting, policy analysis, and academic research. The GHG Emission Factors Hub provides emission factors for a wide range of fuels, transportation modes, refrigerants, waste, and other activities commonly used in greenhouse gas inventories. eGRID provides detailed electricity generation emissions data for estimating the emissions intensity of grid-supplied electricity in the United States.

Methodology description

The U.S. GHG Emission Factors Hub is a regularly updated set of default emission factors for organisational greenhouse gas reporting, originally developed by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and now published by Cornerstone.

The Hub compiles emission factors from a range of authoritative U.S. EPA datasets and other recognised sources, including the EPA Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program, the Inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks, eGRID, the Waste Reduction Model (WARM), IPCC global warming potentials, and other government and technical references where appropriate. It covers a broad range of emission categories including stationary combustion, mobile combustion, purchased electricity, upstream and downstream transportation, business travel, employee commuting, refrigerants, and waste.

For full details, see the Cornerstone GHG Emission Factors Hub: https://zenodo.org/records/20403776.
