Cornerstone Sustainability Data Initiative
About Cornerstone Sustainability Data Initiative
Cornerstone is a sustainability data initiative that maintains and publishes key US environmental datasets, including the US Environmentally-Extended Input-Output (USEEIO) family of models, and eGRID electricity emission factors, originally developed by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). USEEIO provides open emission factors across more than 400 sectors of the US economy and is widely used for Scope 3 corporate accounting, policy analysis, and academic research. eGRID provides detailed electricity generation emissions data for estimating the emissions intensity of grid-supplied electricity in the United States.

| Methodology description | The Supply Chain GHG Emission Factors are derived from the US Environmentally Extended Input-Output (USEEIO) model, originally developed by the US EPA and now maintained by the Cornerstone Sustainability Data Initiative. The model combines input-output tables from the Bureau of Economic Analysis, representing the full supply-chain network of the US economy, with GHG emissions data from public sources. Version 1.4.0 is built on the USEEIOv2.6-phoebe-23 model and uses 2023 GHG data from the US GHG Inventory, covering 16 greenhouse gases. Factors are expressed as kg CO₂e per USD 2024 output of the commodity, using AR6 GWP-100 values. Each commodity record includes three factor types: Supply Chain Emissions without Margins (SEF), Margins of Supply Chain Emissions (MEF), and Supply Chain Emissions with Margins (SEF+MEF), covering all NAICS-defined commodities at the 6-digit level. The USEEIO model produces the direct and then indirect emission intensities following data year adjustments and calculations. The final factors are adjusted to reflect purchaser prices, which are useful with expenditure data. The factors are intended for spend-based Scope 3 accounting under GHG Protocol categories 1 (purchased goods and services) and 2 (capital goods). ADEME
ADEME (Agence de la transition écologique) is the French Agency for Ecological Transition and offers a wide range of emission factors to support the measurement and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in France. These emission factors are used to estimate greenhouse gas emissions associated with various activities, such as energy consumption and transportation.
