Carbon black (made by oil-furnace process)

Process description: The oil-furnace process produces the main product carbon black. For this purpose, the process consumes caustic soda (50%), natural gas, hydrochloric acid, oxygen, and vacuum residue. Utilities consumed comprise cooling water, electricity, inert gas, process water, unspecific inorganic chemical, cement, and disposal of cement. Additionally, the process produces thermal energy and steam as utility by-products. The multifunctionality problem for utility by-products is solved by system expansion via the avoided burden approach. Dataset type is technology-specific (extension layer). Allocation type is no allocation needed in this unit process. In case of energy co-production, allocation via avoided burden is applied for the co-produced energy. CAS RN is 1333-86-4.
