Sodium chloroacetate (sodium chloroacetate production)

Emissions generated by the activity within the product supply chain as described in ecoinvent v3.8. Sodium Chloroacetate (ClCH2COONa)is a sodium salt and of major importance in the chemical industry. Like for chloroacetic acid, the major application of sodium chloroacetate is the manufacture of large quantities of polysaccharides, particularly carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), which is used in food products and many other consumer goods. A second major use is in the manufacture of arylhydroxyacetic acid based herbicides, which are of the most used herbicides, as well as other herbicides and insecticides (Koenig et al., 2012). Other applications of importance are the production of thioglycolic acid, which is then used for stabilizers or consumer hair products and the manufacture of long-chain betaines, used as surfactants in cleaning and personal care products (Koenig et al., 2012). Additionally, there sodium chloroacetate is employed in some minor use fields related to production processes of textiles, personal care and cleaning products and food additives (Koenig et al., 2012).
