Methodology description

The Factor de Emisión del Sistema Eléctrico Nacional (FESEN) is the official Mexican grid electricity emission factor, published annually by the Secretaría de Medio Ambiente Recursos Naturales (SEMARNAT) based on data provided by the Comisión Reguladora de Energía (CRE). It represents the average CO₂e emissions per MWh of electricity delivered to the national grid, accounting for the full generation mix — including gas, hydroelectric, solar, wind, and other sources — from all power plants supplying the Sistema Eléctrico Nacional. The factor is used for mandatory Scope 2 indirect GHG reporting by establishments subject to the Registro Nacional de Emisiones (RENE).

    IEA

The International Energy Agency (IEA) provides comprehensive electricity emission factors, which are essential for understanding the carbon footprint of electricity generation across different regions and energy sources. These factors assist governments, businesses, and researchers in measuring the environmental impact of electricity consumption and in developing strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the energy sector.
