About IPCC

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is a United Nations body that assesses the scientific evidence related to climate change and offers guidance to governments and policymakers on climate-related issues. IPCC provides a range of emission factors in their reports including energy-related emissions, industrial processes, agriculture, and land use and waste management activities.

Methodology description

This dataset is derived from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change methodology and provides emission factors for nitrogen (N) applications in agriculture. The emission factors are based on the 2019 Refinement to the 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories.

The emisison factors retrieved from Chapter 11 are calculated using standardized equations for estimating direct and indirect nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from managed soils. Direct emissions from N application are calculated using Equation 11.2, while indirect emissions from volatilization, leaching, and runoff are estimated using Equations 11.10 and 11.11.

These emission factors represent default (Tier 1) values intended for use where country-specific data are not available and are based on global averages.

Climate conditions (wet or dry) are assigned at the country level using external classification based on Menegat et al. (2022), which influences the selection of appropriate emission factors.

Limitation / key issues to note

These emission factors are suitable for high-level estimates but may not provide accurate results for detailed agricultural assessments, as the underlying calculations rely on simplified assumptions that may not capture complex soil and environmental processes.

    NVE

The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) provides emission factors for greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting, covering physically delivered electricity and supplier-specific disclosures, enabling assessment of Norway’s electricity-related emissions.

    Cornerstone Sustainability Data Initiative

Cornerstone is a sustainability data initiative that maintains and publishes key US environmental datasets, including the US Environmentally-Extended Input-Output (USEEIO) family of models, and eGRID electricity emission factors, originally developed by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). USEEIO provides open emission factors across more than 400 sectors of the US economy and is widely used for Scope 3 corporate accounting, policy analysis, and academic research. eGRID provides detailed electricity generation emissions data for estimating the emissions intensity of grid-supplied electricity in the United States.
